Support Austin’s community while decluttering

Giving back is a big part of Austin’s heart, and your decluttering and organizing process is a perfect chance to contribute.

Donate with Purpose: Drop off usable clothes, kitchenware, books, and toys at local donation centers instead of tossing them. Some great places to do that in Austin, Texas are

  • ARC of the Capital Area — supporting adults with disabilities.

  • Goodwill Central Texas — empowering job seekers.

  • Austin Habitat for Humanity ReStore — funding affordable housing projects.

  • SAFE (SafePlace Austin Foundation for the Elderly)—Supports seniors in need; they accept gently used household items and clothing.

  • Mobile Loaves & Fishes—Helps homeless individuals and families; they accept clothing, blankets, and hygiene products.

  • The Caring Place—A local nonprofit supporting low-income families with food, clothing, and household items.

  • Dress for Success Austin—Provides professional attire to women re-entering the workforce; accepts gently used business clothing and accessories.

  • Austin Pets Alive!—While primarily an animal rescue, they often accept clean blankets, towels, and pet supplies to help shelter animals. They also have Thrift stores that accept donations.

If you cant drop it off, consider posting your items for free on Neighborhood apps: I love to post items for Free on Nextdoor or Buy Nothing groups on Facebook, and things are usually snatched up within a couple hours! I’d rather it go to someone for free who is excited about it than sit in a landfill.

In the end, reduce waste waste as much as you can. Avoid the landfill by recycling what you can. The Austin Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center is a great place for Austin residents to utilize! Hot tip: you have to make a reservation in advance. Another hot tip: you can get a 2nd big blue recycle bin for FREE by calling 311!
