#Parenthack: Creating Systems Involving your Kids is the Secret to your Home Staying Organized
If you've ever felt like you're constantly tidying up but can’t stay on top of your house’s task list you're not alone. The truth is, an organized home doesn't happen from one big cleaning session — it comes from creating systems that keep things in place day after day. And your children play a huge role in maintaining these systems. (…And in my opinion, Back to School is a great time to start a new rhythm!)
When your kids are involved in chores, even if you have a frequent housekeeper, they’re not just “helping out.” They become part of the engine that keeps your home functioning smoothly. And when they understand the why behind what they’re doing — that wiping the counters is part of keeping the kitchen clean, or that putting away their laundry is part of the clothing system — it clicks.
A few examples:
🧺 A laundry system that includes expectations of sorting your clothes and putting them away when they are clean
🧹 A weekly chore chart where everyone knows their responsibilities but allows the flexibility for the crazy days of the week
🎒 A school-night system where backpacks, shoes, and lunches have a home and are ready to go for the next morning to cut down on the morning household buzz.
Bonus: These systems reduce the mental load of constantly making decisions! You don’t have to reinvent the wheel every day — just follow the system.
My advice is start small, in your expectations and age. It won’t be perfect overnight, but with consistency, you’ll build a home that runs smoother than if you hadn’t implemented a plan in the first place.
How you make the plan come alive is up to you of course, but in the meanwhile I’ll include a sampler of my kids’ chore chart.
